PAEROA HOSPITAL.

e THE POSITION EXPLAINED. BRICK BUILDING SUGGESTED. At Thursday night's meeting of the I’aero.a Borough Council Cr. P. E. 1 Jrenha reported on the progress made to date by the. Thames Hospital Board in connection, with the establishment of a maternity and casualty hospital at Paeroa.

Cr. Brenan that after much careful consideration of the plants for the building the board had adopted a plan submitted by the Health Department at an estimated cost by the board’s architect of £6515 in wood, and the department h.ad estimated the cost of a similar building in brick at £7300, including £l5O for excavation work on the site. The plan of the brick ouilding. had been returned to the department for approval. On receipt of approval from Wellington the board proposed.to call alternative tenders for erection in brick and wood, subject to the consent of the contributing local bodies. The financial position was aprpoximately as follows: Paeroa.,. cash donation, £614 3s 5d ; Government subsidy on that amount, £614 3s sd; Government valuation of land, £2565, which included £5OO value of • Crown land, Government subsidy on land £2065, making a total value of land And cash provided by the people of Paeroa, plus Gpvernment subsidies, £5858 6s lOd. To’ those figures’ should be added the amount of approximately £2OOO for equipment and furnishings. The balance of money required amounted to some £3OOO, which the board proposed to collect from' its contributing authorities by a levy spread over a period of two years. To realise the amount required it would be necesisray to increase' the levy by l-16d in the £. which .would mean that the board’s levy for the next two years would be 5-16 d in stead of %d, as at present. The board confidently expected that its proposal would meet with the hearty approval of the local bodies concerned; Cr. Brenan said that in his opinion the* Minister and the departmental officers had recognised the efforts of the residents of Paeroa and district in a generous spirt by the very substantial subsidy granted on the land, and in no small way the satisfactory position of affairs was due to the efforts and assistance rendered by Mr H. Poland, M.P., especially when the board’s representatives visited Wellington in October last in connection with the matter.
