TURUA TOWN BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The regular meeting of the Turua Town Board was held on Wednesday evening, the chairman, Mr J. Mules, presiding over Messrs C. Scott, F. Beck, J. T. Davies, and J. E. Green, the secretary. THE DOMAIN. Mr T. F. Martin, counsel to the Municipal Association of New Zealand, in reply to the board’s inquiry gave the following opinion: “The further fact since the date of my last opinion is that ‘the land has now actually been legally transferred to the Crown by the private owners.’ The question how is, whether the town board could take over the control of the recreation ground and administer the same without having to form a domain board o’r be under the restrictions of the Domain Boards Act. “The recreation reserve, being now vested in the Crown, is a public re - serve within the Act, There is no power for the Government to vest the freehold of such a public reserve in a local authority, this power being limited to reserves coming within Class L of the Act, headed ‘Reserves for County, Local, and Municipal Purposes.’ Neither is there power for the Government, while retaining the freehold of the reserve, to Vest the control or management thereof in a local authority, this power being given only as regards deserves in Classes I, and 11. I am, therefore, of opinion that the question put must oe answered in ‘.he negative.” In accordance with his notice of motio.. the chairman moved, and Mr Scott seconded, that a public meeting of residents of the township and (sun rounding district be held on Tuesday, August 19, such meeting to select by ballot or otherwise seven suitable persons for nomination for appointment as d domain board. —Carried. THE HALL LOAN. The Superintendent of the State Advances Department wrote stating that steps were being, taken to obtain the precedent consent of the GovernorGeneral in Council in terms of section 20 of the Finance Act to the raising of the money. THE ROADING SCHEME. A telegram wap received from a contracting firm asking if the board had a road roller for hire, and also the price of metal specified as avail> able. The clerk reported having replied that there was no- roller available in Turua, but one could be obtained in Auckland. Metal cost 10s a yard. Two firms of bitumen dealers wrote asking if the board would consider calling tenders for the supply of bitumen as separate from the actual work. The clerk wrote advising the agents to get in touch with contractors. Inquiries for specifications were received from two contractors, wfao were referred to a copy in Auckland. METAL SUPPLIES. The problem of securing supplies of metal was discussed at. great length. Hopeful signs had latterly proved failures, and now there appeared no chance of getting metal from anywhere BEAUTIFYING THE. TOWN, In regard to the donation of £2 16s from thfe Ratepayers’ Association for the purpose of beautifying the township, the chairman said that the association had expressed the wish for trees to be planted. However, these would require a great deal of protection. It was decided that the Works Committee go into the question of planting pohutukawa trees. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £34 4s 6d were passed for payment.
