JUNIOR REPRESENTATIVES. PIAKO DEFEATS PAEROA. The Thames Valley Union’s junior knock-out competition tor the Sharebrokers’ Cup was concluded on Saturday, when the Paeroa team was defeated at Te Aroha by the Piako fifteen by 11 points to 3. Piako won the competition last year, and by beating Paeroa on Saturday retains the cup for another term. Generally it was a forward game, but at times good back play was indulged in, and in merit the exhibition was equal to senior football in the district. The Paeroa boys did not play ip to expectations, and on the day the better team won. The following players took the field: Piako. —Hubert, Towers, B. Tretheway, Wright, Mclnteer, Munro. Tremain, Dalton, Farac, Curie, , Stace, Mace, Manning, N. Tretheway, CooperPaeroa. —Swann, Wells, Moore, Jones, Nield, Mead, Hardman, TreanOr, Neil, Buchanan, Shaw, Smith, McLeod, Williams, Thorp. Piako kicked off, followed by a penalty to Piako at halfway. In loose play Curie made a run and kicked over the line, Swann forcing. From a line-out at halfway Hardman set the Paeroa backs going, but Moore dropped his pass for the Piako forwards to institute a rush which was broken by Swann clearing to the line. The ball hung in the visiters’ twenty-iflve, and Hardman terminated tight play in front of the posts by clearing to the halfway flag. An interchange of kicks followed considerable dose play in neutral territory, Thorp finally sending out at Piako’s twenty-five. From the throw-in Hardman opened up for Paeroa, the ball being handled in turn by all the backs to Jones, who put his foot out in his run for the corner Shortly afterwards Smith passed back in a line-out to Hardman and again the ball travelled through the Paeroa backs to Wells on the wing, but the rush was not straight enough and Wells was crowded out on th'e lino, in open play Piako worked back to the other twenty-five line, from where Towers had an unsuccessful kick at goal. Piako attacked, but Jones relieved the pressure by marking under the posts. Piako returned, and the quarter ended with Paeroa defending. Paeroa gave ground in the second quarter, and after some ' loose play about the twenty-five line Piako carried on to the line. I a five-yards scrum Tremain was penalised for picking out bf the scrum. The defending forwards followed up the kick to nearly halfway, Towers stopping the movement by marking. Piako again pressed, and from a scrum on the line Treanor obtained possession. His kick to clear was blocked and the ball rebounded over the line for Moore to force in the corner. The pressure was renewed by Piako, and from anothei scrum on the line Hardman forced. After considerable loose play in neutral territory the home team again advanced. In a loose rush Piako kicked over the line, and in the race for the ball obstruction occurred, the referee awarding a try to Piako. Towers converted. Piako 5, Paeroa ()• A penalty was given to Piako from the opening kick after half-time and the ball was sent out near Paeroa’s eornei. After several line-outs Smith cleared and the Paeroa forwards worked down to the other twenty-five. Tretheway committed a breach but Moore's kick failed to pass the mark and the game devolved into open play in the neutral zone. From a scrum about halfway Piako hooked and the ball went to Wright. Putting in a short run, Wright then centred. Wells failed to field the hall under the posts and left an opening for B. Tretheway to score. Towers failed with the kick. Piako 8, Paeroa 0. The kickout was returned, and shortly afterwards Neil was penalised near the twenty-five flag but the kick was unsuccessful and Paeroa forced. A passing rush by Piako broke down and Wells carried well into the home team’s territory. In Piako worked out a little, but from a line-, out the visiting forwards rushed back to the line. The finishing touch was not applied, however, and after a period of open play Piako forced. Paeioa attacked in the final round, and from a line-out Nield kicked over for Piako to force. In loose play at halfway Wells held on to the ball too long and • was brought down. This gave riako an opening, and in a loose rush the leather was kicked over the line, Stace scoring. Towers failed to convert. Piako 11, Paeroa 0. Paeroa then livened up and put more dash into the game. A good run by Jones down the line was stopped by Tremain, who kicked well up the field, Swann returning. In loose play in front of the posts the ball Went to Swann, who failed with a drop-kick. The drop .out was scrummed, from which Paeroa advanced in a loose rush over the line, Hardman scoring. The ball was not held properly for Swann’s kick. Piako 11, Paeroa J. Paeroa immediately resumed the attack, and in a back movement on the line Hardman lost an opportunity through hesitating to pass and Piako cleared. The ball went to the other twenty-five, but Buchanan immediately headed a forward rush back again to Piako’s corner. Close play then followed in Piako’s twenbfive until time was called, the game ending with the scores Piako 11, Paeroa 3. Mi T. Atkins was referee. POLAND CUP COMPETITION. PAEROA TEAM FOR SATURDAY. JUNIORS: Kerepeehi 8. v. Ngatea 6. THIRD-GRADE: Paeroa School 18, v. East 0. EAST 13, SUBURBS 3. The principal attraction at the Paeroa Domain on Saturday was the senior game East v. Suburbs. Thye was a large attendance of the public, and at times feeling ran high among certain factions of the spectators. The afternoon was fine, with bright sunshine, and the ground was dry and in good condition. The game was fast and willing throughout, and each team was out for a win and there were no ‘‘bog pardons” about the tackling. The teams were fairly evenly matched, but the visitors appeared to gain the advantage in the majority of the scrums. The scores did not reveal a true indication of the game, as Suburbs played far and away the better game in the first two quarters, and were unfortunate in not scoring on several occasions. The teams were . East.—Williams, W. Smith, Moore, L. Smith, D. Smith, G. Royal, Treanor, Nealie, H. Pennell, M. Pennell, Fitch, Benney. Morris, Patterson, Neil. Suburbs.—Rare, L. Samson, R. Samson, J. Hake, A. Royal, Mills, Donald, Cashmore, E. Samson, Welch, Young, E. Bennett, W. Bennett. Goonan, Killgour. East kicked off and carried play into the visitors’ twenty-dive. From a throw in Suburbs pressed and in a loose rush Cashmore set the backs in motion, faulty passing losing a good chance to score, the ball going out near the corner. The throw-in gave Cashmore another chance, but he was unsupported and East forced. Loose play ensued for some time in the home team’s twenty-five, Benney eventually securing and kicking to midfield. Donald fielded the ball and returned it into East's twenty-five. I. Smith retired, and was replaced by William's, Gibson filling Williams’ position as full-liack. In the second quarter East again defended, Moore relieving with a good kick, the result of a mark near the posts. After a short spell of -loose play benney, Fitch, and Patterson carried play into the visitors’ twenty-five, where, following a breach, Mbore kicked a penalty goal. East 3, Suburbs 0. Following the kick-out loose play resulted in the ball going out in East’s territory, The throw-in went to G. Royal, to W. Smith, who made a good run down the line but was collared near the corner. From the throw in Cashmore obtained possession and, centring .smartly, Suburbs pressed hard and had bad luck in not. getting over. Play hovered in midfield for some time; until the visiting forwards instituted a rush, Hake and E. Samson being the most prominent. The ball travelled beyond East’s twenty-five line, when Moore ran across and with a speculator relieved the situation. Donald promptly returned with the ball and transferred to Cashmore, to Young, who carried over the line near the posts. E. Bennett failed with the kick. East 3, Suburbs 3. On resuming after half-time Suburbs went on the defence, several for-> ward rushes by East being negatived by the sound defence of the Suburbs backs, who returned play Lc midfield, where an exchange of kicks ensued. For a breach Suburbs had a penalty, but Hake, failed to score. Play was fast arid open, and at this stage honours were even. After a short spell of play in neutral territory the home team worked down the field, Suburbs being penalised for offside play within the twenty-five. Moore took the kick, nut failed, Killgour secured and passed to Young, and play went back into midfield. Following several loose rushes, in which the ball was freely handled by both sides, Treanor picked up and after a short run transferred to Morris, who beat the full-back and dived over. Moore failed to convert. East t>. Suburbs 3.
The final quarter opened with fast open play, each man playing hie part with a will. A forward rush by the Reds resulted in the home team forcing. The game became fast and open, and both sides indulged in several passing rushes, but the ball was restricted to the neutral zone until forward pressure by East made Suburbs take the defensive. E. Samson relieved with.a long kick to the line- From the throw-in Hake secured and passed to L. Samson, to A. Royal, the latter making a good run only to be brought down near the corner. Following the throw-in D. Smith cet his backs going, passing to G. Royal, who transfer)ed .to Morris, who carried on into Suburbs territory, where a series of senums took place, resulting in Moore ultimately securing and drop-kicking a good goal. East 10, Suburbs 3. An attach was initiated by Suburbs with the kick-out, but the East backs, who were working well, frustrated the effort. From a line-out near halfway G. Royal transferred to Treanor, to W. Smith, who ran round behind the posts but was brought back for a breach. In the last few minutes of the game a forward rush by the home team resulted in Benney securing and diving over near the posts. Moore again failed with the kick. East 13, Suburbs ,3. Shortly afterwards time was called, playing being in Suburb’s territory. Mr E. Smith was referee.
