PAEROA RUGBY UNION.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The committee of the Paeroa Rugby Union met in the Fire Brigade Shed on Wednesday evening. Mr P. E. Brenan presiding over the following: Messis W. Pennell, C. T. Mettam. H M. Shand, and C. H. Butcher, secre- | tary. - | B SENIOR MATCH. A telegram was received from the Piako Rugby Union asking if the local union could arrange to send a B senior representative team to play at Te Aroha on Saturday next (tomorrow). After some discussion it was agreed | that the time was too short to arrange , for a team, and that the Piako Union I be advised accordingly. I THIRD-GRADE TEAM. ! The Thames Union advised that the I second Physical Training team which I could visit Paeroa was registered as ; a third-grade team in the union., and i the weight of the players averaged | 9st 101 b. it was agreed to permit a local representative third-grade team to plav against Thames on Tuesday next, Juno 3, at the Paeroa Domain, play to commence at 1.30 p.m. Mr Pennell said that some heartburning existed among the thirdgrade players because the selectors hart chosen several registered junior players to play in the match. Mr Shand stated that the position had been carefully studied, and the selectors had done the best they Could. It had to be remembered that the Thames third-grade team averaged Ost 101 b, whereas the local team would only average about 8-t 71b. For tiiat reason it had been considered advisable to include several registered junior players, each of whom did not. exceed the weight, in the team to strengthen it. It was agreed that the team as selected should stand. PROTEST LODGED. The Karangahake club lodged a protest in connection with the East v. Karangahake match, which was played on April 26, on the grounds that the Thomas Bros, were not registered players of the East club, and also that another player had only been a visitor to Paeroa and was not registered by the club. Owing to the absence of the Karangahake member Hie matter was deferred until next week. FENCING THE' GROUND. Mr Mettam was appointed, With authority to engage help, to erect a. post and wire fence round the No. 1 ground before Saturday. referees. It was decided to ask the Paeroa Referees’ Association to notify the union of the names of the referees appointed to control the various games on Saturdays, the names to be handed to the«secretary not later than 4 P.m. each Thursday. VACANCY ON UNION. Mr T. Walsh was elected to the committee to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr Power. DELEGATES. Messrs Pennell, Mettam, and Shand were appointed delegates to z the Thams Valley Union. REGISTRATIONS. The following registrations were accepted: V. Smith, East juniors ; C. Townsend, Netherton jf»iort. It was decided to regrade J. E. Bigelow from senior to junior in West club and J. Wickcliff from senior to junior in East club. GENERAL. Messrs Shand and Mettam were deputed to arrange for gatekeepers and to attend to the issue of jerseys for the representative match. It was agreed to supply the thirdgrade team with representative jer,seys on Tuesday next. The chairman said that, an effort must be made to have the gate takings at matches outside Paeroa remitted promptly to the secretary. The presen. method was very unsatisfactory, and the union could not carry on satisfactory unless some definite arrangements were made. TO-MORROW’S FIXTURES. Senior. —Paeroa V. Waihi, at Paeroa.. Juniors.—West v. Suburbs, at Pacroa; East v. Netherton, at Netherton ; Karangahake a bye. . PLAIN’S UNION MEETING. A meeting pf the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union was held at Ngatea on Tuesday, evening, Mr J. Costello presid'ng over a full attendance. in opening the meeting the chairman congratulated the representative team on the fight put up at Thames. The report of the match published in the "Gazette” was read by the secretary. and several m'Sllffier's agreed with the and report. . '• PIAKO MATCH. J-’/ue secretary of the Piako Rugby Un'on wrote asking if the Poland Cup match could be commenced at 2 P.m. —Agreed to. The matter of entertainment was left to the secretary. Members of the Ngatea club wcie detailed Ip attend to the ground. As a curtain-raiser it was decided to play an A. and B. junior match. Mr J. N. Anderson was appointed referee for the senior game and Mr M. Leonard for the curtain-raiser. SELECTION OF TEAMS. Four members of the representative team, from the Ngatea and Kerepeehi clubs, wrote expressing their dissatisfaction with the selection of the team chosen to play against Thames, stating that the appointing of men to play in places they were not accustomed to was not in the best interests of the game. They hoped the selectors would give the matter their attention, and not take the letter in any other spirit than that intended, which was for the good of the team.
Mr G Porteous, one of the selectors, said that if they were to take,, notice of the players there would be np end.
If (he Union was dissatisfied, the selectors should be asked to resign, otherwise the union should not interfere. He then explained the reason fur placing the backs as liad been done, and explained that the selectors had not been able to see ail the club matches. The selectors announced the team chosen for to-morrow, and it was discussed at length. The team submitted was as follows :— Full-back, -E. Costello (West) , three-quarters, C. Molloy (Ngatea), JAdl’.un (Kerepeehi), Marks (West) ; five-eighths, C. Stretton OVait«k.lruru), F. Nicoll (Ngatea) ; half-back, E. Masters (Kerepeehi) ; rover, L Ryan (Coast) ; forwards, B. Wallis (Coast). J. Millington (West), N. Cowdrey (West), L. Hunt (Waitakaruru), Rapana (Kerepeehi), D. Cowdrey (West). K. a Fox (Turua). Emcrgencise: Steedman (Kerepeehi) and Lipscombe (Ngatea), forwards; L. Clotworthy (Turua) and Ellis’(Ngatea) hacks. THE BIRCH CUP. Mr 11. Green moved that a challenge be entered for tiie Birch CUPSeconded by Mr Thompson. It was decided .that meetii gs of the union be held fortnightly, on Monday evenings. REFEREES’ ASSOCIATION. The weekly meeting of the Hauraki Plains Referees’ Association irtas held at Ngatea on Tuesday evening, the president, Mr G. T. Davidson, presiding over an attendance of 17. including several Rugby Union members. The presidnt cordially welcomed Dr. Valentine to the association. Messrs J. N. Anderson and F. Stretton were forwarded to the Rugby Union for the selection of a referee for to-morrow’s representative match and M. Leonard as referee for the curtain-raiser. A member mentioned that he had noticed in the “Gazette” that the Paeroa association had obtained an outside referee to give a blackboard lecture lo referees and players. He thought the idea should be copied. The president mentioned that at in the near future Mr Dunstan, of Waihi, would give such a lecture in Ngatea.
