OHINEMURI COUNTY.
.MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council was held in Paeroa yesterday, the following'being present : Crs. A. R. Robinson., (chairman), 8. H. Morgan, W. F, Johnstone, F. C. Hubbard. A. D. McGuire, P. Corbett, Ti. M. Corbett, R. R. Morrison, and C. E, Mace, and Messrs E. Shaw (engineer), and R. W. Evan? (clerk). MINING PRIVILEGES. The Receiver of Gold Revenue, Paeroa. forwarded a list of outstanding rents due on mining privileges, with the request that the council recommend the Hon. Minister for Mines to treat 'he rents as not recoverable, >n accordance with. the provisions of section •10'2 of “The Mining Act, 1908. 'VAIKINO SCHOOL SITE. The Auckland Education Board advised ihat it was proposed to erect a new school at Waikino u’i sections 62, 63, 64, 69, 72, and the northern ha>f of 73, Waikino township, and asked the council to consent to the closing of a portion of King Street. —Referred to the engineer and Cr. Morgan, with power to act. FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE. The Piako County Council wrote asking for support in representations to the Department of Agriculture pointing out the grave danger of in treducing foot and mouth disease into New Zealand and requesting that fresh regulations should be gazetted as it il was considered that the regulations at present in force were not sufficiently stringent. The council decided to accord its support. WHANGAMATA ROAD. The Whangamata Settlers’ Association .sought information as to whe.i the portion of the Waihi-Whangamata road near Parakiwi would be completed. The letter stated that the settles were doing £lOO worth of worn between Whangamata and Purakiwi, and it was hoped that the council would complete the formation of the few chains required before the roa 1 was put right through. The engineer intimated that the work was being proceeded with. PARAKIWAI STREAM. The same association wrote asking that the council, jointly with the Thames County Council, should apply to have a sum placed on this year’s E-stimates sufficient for the erection of a oridge over Parakiwrd Stream, which formed part of the boumlar. between the two counties. It was pointed out that the unsuitability of the present crossing, and its limitations in wet weather, had been recognised by the Government surveyor when laying off the route by making provision for a bridge site. The engineer stated that until a bridge was erected there would be no crossing. The matter was an urgent one. Cr. H. M. Corbett said that the road would open up a large area of undeveloped country, but it was doubtful if the county would get the benefit. In any ease, he would like to see the work pushed on with. It was decided to apply for a grant. CULVERT REQUIRED. Messrs Blackmore and Mathers Waihi, wrote drawing attentton to th? culveii that had been washed but an Frank.on Road, Waihi. by the recent flood. The culvert was too small to cope with the drainage vater, an 1 they requested that a deep culvert lie erected. The chairman said the culvtert was large enough, but it had become blocked at the bottom end, which had been cleared out and was now satisfactory. TE AROHA ROAD DRAIN. T. P. Vuglar, Paeroa, wrote requesting the council to clean the drain on Tc Aroha Road lyetween the Waihi and main railway lines. It was stated that the drain was the i-iain outlet for the drainage of 100 acres, and as it 1 ad not been cleaned out for a number of years the area had become waterlogged, making it an impossibility to grow pasture.—Granted. PUKE OUTFALL DRAIN. Messrs H. Poland and .4. Hunter, Paeroa. on behalf of the property owners rdjacent to the Puke main outfall drain, wrote requesting the council to make a donation towards the cost of cleaning the Crain.—R' - ferred to riding members. KOMATA ROAD. Cr. Morrison drew attention to the bad state of Komata North Road, and also Wharf Rmid. He con-idered that about 50 yards of metal were required to effect necessary repairs.—Referred to the engineer, wi‘h power ta act. REMOVAL OF POLE. Cr. Hubbard suggested that the Post and Telegraph Department should be aporoachcd and asked to remove a telegraph pole which hail been elected on the main Tc Aroha road near the turn-off to Mill Road. He contended that the pole was a danger to vehicular traffic. NOXIOUS WEEDS. Cr. Johnstone suggested that steps be tai'en to clear the blackberry ’.n the cemetery reserve as« soon as possible —Agreed to. Cr. Johnstone asked what was the position regarding the clearing ci noxious weed from the road frontages of property owners, and mentioned that some trouble was being experienced in that direction on the Old Te Aroha Road at the present time in connection with the clearing of a drain. The chairman replied tbac owne’s could be compelled to clear noxiou* weeds .to the centre of roads. The matter was referred to the eu gineer with power to act. ALEXANDER’S DRAIN. The chairman referred to- the | amour.- of work that was being car- I ried out by the Public Works Depart- I ment in the vicinity of Alexander s Drain, and suggesed that a smaller drain, connecting up with the main outfall drain, should be deepened an.l widened at a cost of £35. and that the speaker and other settlers affected by the overflow of flood water were prepared to contribute about £25 towards the work. —Referred to the engineer, chairman, and Cr, Morrison.
