PURIRI METAL.

USE AS BOTTOM COURSE.

APPROVED BY THE.DEPARTMENT.

Advice has been received by the Hauraki Plains County engineer, Mr J, Higgins, from Mr Baker, of the Public Works Department, that Puriri metal can be used as a bottom course for bitumen roads.

The receipt of. this news will be very welcome to the ratepayers r.i the Turua southern area, Where a considerable amount of Puriri metal has already been laid. Bitumen-bound roads on the Plains will m future require to be laid down with five inches of loose metal, which, after being rolled, will receive a second coating of metal to the depth of 2Q inches. The top course will also have to be 2Q inches when rolled. This will be required to gain the approval of the Public Works Department, and will mean am increase in the cost of the work as the estimates of the county engineer provided for nine inches of loose metal, whereas now nearly twelve inches will be required. The result will undoubtedly be a better road.
