SPECIAL RATING AREA,

WAIHI AND WAITEKAURI RIDINGS SETTLERS FAVOUR PROPOSITION., At Thursday’s meeting of the Ohinenuiri County Council Cr. H. M. Corbett reported that) he had attended a meeting of settlers from portions of the Waihi and Waitekauri ridings to consider the question of the erection of a bridge over' the upper reaches of the Oiiinemuri River and the formation of a special ratling area to provide for the bridge, and also the metalling of the WaihiWhangamata road. Cr. Corbett said that he had pointed out to the settlers the advisability of sanctioning a special rating area over the two ridings, so as to strengthen the hands of the council and enable it to arrange for the necessary poll to be taken.- The settlers were unanimously in favour of the special rating area', and he would ask the engineer to prepare estimates and information, to be supplied at the council’s January meeting. He thought the settlers should be given Government assistance, even in view of a loan being carried,; because the special rate would amount to nearly 3d, which would be a very heavy burden. The settlers were progressive, and fully realised their liability for the extra rates, and they would appreciate an extended effort by the council in their interests.
