A social s and dance to bid farewell to Dr. D. A. Bathgate, who has been appointed house surgeon at the Thames Hospital, and to welcome hi* successor, Dr Valentine, and his wife, was held in the Victoria Hall, Turua, on Thursday. A short programme was contributed by local artists, . after which the floor was cleared and dancing endulged in. During the supper interval the Rev. D. C. Steward voiced the regret of the people of Turua in losing the doctor, and stated that within the next few days a handsome suitcase would be forwarded to him as a small token of their esteem. The doctor intends having a few days’ holiday before taking up his new duties. There passed away at . Thames on Thursday evening last a very old resident in the person of Mrs K. Twohill, proprietress of the Brian Boru Hotel. The late . Mrs Twohill was born in County Glare, Ireland, 79 years ago, and, as a young girl, came with her parents to Melbourne, and later to Greymouth, on the West Coast. Her husband, the late Mr Edward Twohill, came with the first settlers to Thames, and bought the Brian Boru Hotel. He then went to Greymouth to marry Mrs Twohill, and they journeyed by the steamer John Penn to Auckland, and then came on to Thames, where Mrs Twohill has resided ever since, a period of 55 years. Her husband predeceased her about 28 years ago, and Mrs Twohill nnd her family carried on the hotel, thus making her one of the oldest licensees in the Dominion. She leaves two sons and two daughters, Messrs J. and D.' Twohill and Misses M. K. and V. C. Twohill, and several grandsons and grand-daughters to mourn their great loss.
