BATHING IN THE WAIHOU.
CHILDREN IN DIFFICULTIES. SMART RESCUE BY MAORI WOMAN On Saturday afternoon last some Maori children were bathing in the W&ihou River at Tirohia, when Nehu Reweti, aged 9 years, got into difficulties and called out for assifetance. A girl named Nellie Hannah, 12 years old, promptly went to her rescue, but was. pulled under the water by the struggling child. A further rescue was attempted by another child named Ra Paul, aged 10 years, who on reaching the two struggling girls was also pulled under, adding to the difficulties. The three children clung together, struggling, and were carried down the river . Mrs C. Waikato fortunately heard the cries cf the children, and hurrying to the bank saw them drifting down the river. Without hesitation Mrs Waikato jumped into the river and succeeded in rescuing all three children, who but for her timely appearance would have been drowned. The children, other than suffering from shock, were little the worse for their experience. Mrs Waikato deserves high commendation for her plucky action in effecting a most difficult rescue.
