CHARGES OF THEFT.

HEARING AT THAMES). REFORMATIVE DETENTION GIVEN. .-At the Magistrate’s Court .at Thames on Monday Bill Brunell, alias Giles William, a man aged 23 years, appeared to answer charges committed on November 14. which were breaking ajnd entering the dwelling of Ci. D. Sanders and stealing two ladies’ brooches, K two pairs of spectacles, and a purse, to the value of £4 ,10s ; stealing a pair of trousers, valued at £1 15s, from the shop of F. H. Claxton stealing a gold-ring, set with diamonds and rubies, valued at £3 15s, from the shop of A. P. Buick, and stealing a bunch of keys from the shop of W. Thorn and 14 metal theatre tickets from the King’s Theatre. Sergt. McDonnell asked that the cases be dealt with summarily. The accused pleaded guilty to all the charges. The Sergeant stated that Brunell went into the theatre first and stole the tickets, and then went round the town selling them for 6d each. He visited the jeweller’s and the assistant shower him a tray of rings, and while her back was turned he stole a ring. Later, he,called at Mr Sander’s place, which he ransacked. All the articles mentioned had been recovered. Accused was known to the police. When asked by the Magistrate whether he had anything to say, accused said that he was under the influence of drink. He stated that he had been drinking methylated spirits. His Worship said accused was evidently not incapable, as all the acts showed otherwise. His record was a bad one from hi,s boyhood up, and he had qualified to be an habitual criminal. Accused was convicted and sentenced to reformative detention not exceeding three years.—Thames Star.
