tennis club. £ The annual general meeting of the™ members of the Hikutaia Tennis Club was held in the school on Monday night, Mr A. W. Alley presiding over a large attendance. The report and balance-sheet were adopted, while office-bearers were elected as follows : President, Mr James Elliot; vicepresidents, Messrs M. C. Smith and G. Gibb ; secretary, Miss L. M. Frost; committee, Mrs J. Elliot, Misses Gibb and S. Morrison, Messrs C. Gibb, Howard, Morrison, L. Samson, and Smith ; representative on the execu- / tive committee, Mr M. C. Smith; selection and match committee, Miss M. Elliot, Messrs C, Gibb and Howard Morrison. , The grounds superintendent, Mr Hugh Morrison, reported that the material for re-tarring and sanding the courts was on the ground, and, given dry weather, work would be begun at once so that they could be used without any unnecessary delay/ suggested that the space set aside for a grass court be put in order and mu de ready for use in the immediate future. It was unanimously resolved affiliate with the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, the secretary being instructed to take the necessary . steps. After a brief discussion the j date for the official opening was left for decision by the executive committee. In thanking the members for the honour done him the newly elected president paid a deserved tribute to his predecessor in office, who, with Mrs Alley as secretary, had worked so hard to promote the best interests of the club. With the members ho deeply regretted their resignation, and moved that the appreciation of their services by the members be recorded in the club’s minutes—a mo- ' tion that was carried by acclamation, , as also was the vote of thanks to the out-going officials. The usual courtesies to the chair brought a very successful meeting to an end. , CROQUET CLUB. The annual general meeting of the metnbers of the Hikutaia CroqtfgtClub took place on Monday nighti, Mr G. Avery presiding over a fair attendance. After the adoption of the report and balance-sheet officer-bear-, ers for the ensuing year were elected as fallows: President, Mr G. Avery; vice-presidents, Mesdames Avery and A. R. Robinson ; secretary, Mrs Wi. H. Alley ; committee, Mesdames Alt- . Alley, E. Elliot, Faville, Henwood, I. Murdoc,k and Shine, together with Mr P. Shine; representative on the executive committee, Mr G. Avery. The meeting decided to affiliate with the N.Z. Croquet Association, the secretary being instructed to make the arrangements required. The meeting resolved to open the lawn on the day fixed for the official-, opening of the bowling'.green and tennis court. The' usual courtesies to the brought the proceedings to a close. BAILThe preparations for the grand plain and fancy dress ball to be held next month under the auspices of the Croquet Club are well under way, and, judging by the efforts being made to cater for the an anticipated large attendance, the function promises to be quite the event of the season, CHURCH. The Rev. Mr Jefferson, of the Methodist Church, Paeroa, held a service in St. Many’s Church last Sunday. SCHOOL. The annual inspection visit to the Hikutaia West school was paid by' Inspector Lambourne on Saturday, in lieu of which day Monday was observed as a holiday. PERSONAL. Mr Hugh. Morrison, after a week’s visit to Auckland, returned home Monday. While in the city he visiteoW a number of bowling greens and tennis courts in order to note suggestions which he might carry into effect locally, Such zeal is most praiseworthy, and sets a’n example well woithy of imitation. WAIMARIE CUT. The abandonment by the Paeroa - Chamber of Commerce of the proposal advocating the much discussed diversion of the river by cutting through the Waimarie bend has given considerable satisfaction to those settled whose properties would be detrimentally affected. It is hoped that .this will be the last attempt to promote a scheme that formerly created, and still arouses, much bitter opposition locally.
