ERGOT POISONING.
successful treatment. The cure of ergot poisoning in stock is a matter that has baffled veterinary surgeons for years. Manv attempts have been made, but until recently no cure was known. Ergot is a parasite that grows chiefly on ripened seed, and the cattle receive the poison from the hay fed to them from the crops cut curing .the summer months. Many valuable beasts have been lost, and in some cases whole herds have been affected. The poison from the ergot settles in the hind legs of the cattle, and very soon afterwards the beast becomes paralysed, and, consequently, once it gejs down is unable to again move from the spot. The treatment that Mr C. S. Shepherd, veterinary surgeon, has discovered is one that he has carried out with marked success, as can be well vouched for in this district by many farmers. It is entirely new, and is a valuable discovery in veterinary science.
