THE SHOOTING SEASON.
LIBERATION OF PHEASANTS. GOOD SEASON PROJECTED. Mr D. Leach, secretary of the Ohinemuri Acclimatisation Society, has received from the Auckland society a crate containing thirty pheasants for liberation in this district. The birds were brought to Paeroa by Mr McAnnally, superintendent of the Cambridge Game Farm, where the birds- were reared. At present the birds are in charge of Mr E. J. Walters, of Hikutaja, and it is hoped to liberate .them during next week. They will be divided into three lots of ten each, to be distributed at Puriri, Hikutaia, and Karangahake. The .birds are particularly well grown, and are in a very forward condition. The pheasants are being liberated earlier this year, as at, a meeting of the parent body of the society some time ago the point was raised by the local secretary that birds should be liberated as early as possible each year, in order to give them a better chance to become acclimatised to the new districts, and also ot account of there being more natural food available at this time of the yean The birds are not then likely , to fall such easy prey to the guns. It is reported that quail are very plentiful "this year; and indications are very bright for a successful shooting season in this district. The season opens on May 1.
