TENNIS ON THE PLAINS.
AN ASSOCIATION FORMED. LAIDLAW CUP RULES. A meeting of delegates from various tennis clubs of the Hauraki Plains was held at, Ngatea on Friday to consider a proposal to form' a Hauraki Plains Tennis’ Association. There were present Messrs J. M. Devereaux (Kerepeehi) convenor, W. G. Hayward (Ngatea) D. G. McMillan, P. R. Henry (Turua), A. R- Vowles (Hopai), O. W. Bonney (Kaihere), and C. Stretton JWaitakaruru). Mr Hayward was elected to the chair, and Mr 'A.\R. Vowles was elected hon. secretary. On the motion of Mr McMillan it was decided to form a tennis association on the Plains.' Mr Hayward was elected president. The matter of representation of the various clubs was discussed. Mr McMillan explained that; though Turua had two delegates at the meeting he wished it understool that his club had only one vote at the meeting. On Mr Henry’s motion it was decided to request each club to appoint one delegate, and if the clubs so wished they could each appoint & deputy. % The president, secretary, and Mr Devereaux were appointed a sub-com-mittee to discuss rules' for the association. ( ft' was moved by Mr McMillan that the association does npt affiliate with anv other body for the first year. The motion was carried by the chairman’s casting vote. It was decided that the affiliation fee to each club be £1 Is.
THE LAIDLAW CUP. During a discussion concerning ths Laidlaw Cup, Mr McMillan asked if Turua as the last year’s winners' would play the winner of the semifinal this year. The chairman : That means that if another club -wants the cup it has: to go to Turua. to play. Mr McMillan : Yes. ' The- chairman said they should interpret the ’rules under which the cup was played for last year and adhere to the interpretation. Mr Devereaux maintained that Mr McMillan’s suggestions could not, by the reading of the rules, be entertained? A Mr Vowles l moved that the rules under which the competition. was played last year be adopted by the association fon title future government of the competition. _ Mr Devereaux seconded and the motion was carried. _ - ’flic chairman said the cup should not '.have been called a challenge cup as the rules contradicted that it was a challenge cup. Messrs McMillan and. Stretton said they had been insructed" o vote against such a motion and had their votes recorded against it. Kaihere, Turua, Waitakaruru, Hopai, Kopuarahi, and Kerepeehi were entered for the Laidlaw Cup. The fol'owing matches were arranged: Firs! Round: Waitakaruru v. Kerepeehi at Waitakaruru ; Hopai v. Turua at Hopai ; Kaihere v. Kopuarahi at (<aiherd > . It was decided to play the first round on February 10, the second round on February 24,*and the final' on March) 10. A “B ” GRADE. Mr Hayward suggested the formation of a B grade competition similar to the Laidlaw Cup competition so that those who were not competent to enter for the cup _could enter a team In the B grade. Some of the “ sports ” might donate a trophy. Mr McMillan suggested a handicap tournament.
The Waitakaruru and Turua representatives said that their clubs could send B teams. The Ngatea representative said that Ngatea would enter for the B grade but rot for the .A grade. It was decided to promote a B grade competition to be run on the shme lines as the Laid) aw competitions. ...
