DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The usual monthly meeting of the above committee was helld op Saturday evening last. Present: Messrs W. H. Taylor (chairman), C. Pascoe, WCXPowcr, C. Cane, N. C. Busby, EX E. Gi’lman, W. L. Lawrence (secretary and treasurer), and the headmaster, Mir G. H. Taylor. INFANTS' ROOM. With regard to the committee’s recommendation to effect improvements to the ventilation of the infants' room, a reply was received from the Board’s architect, Mr J. Farrell, to the effect that the foreman of works would visit Paeroa prior to the holidays' and would then see what could be done to improve matters by increasing the ventilation and lighting of this room. HAURAKI A. AND P. SHOW. A letter was received from the secretary of the above show-association pointing out that such shows were instructive to children, and offejripg to admit school children to the ground’s free of charge providing they, were in possession of passes initialled by the teachers, if the '.committee could see its way to grant a holiday. It was decided to thank the show officials for their generous offer, and to grant the children a whole holiday on Thursday, the 14th inst. ’ CHRISTMAS' HOLIDAYS. The Christmas holidays for public schools will begin on Thursday, December 21, at 3 p.m., and will reopen on Tuesday, February 6, 1923.
TERM HOLIDAYS FOR 1923. Tihic Education Board advised that the fallowing school vacations: would, be observed during 1923 :—Easter : Good Friday and Easter Monday.; May, one week, beginning on Monday, May 14 ; and in August and September two weeks will be observed, be- . ginning on Monday, August 27. > SCHOOL GROUND IMPROVEMENTS. The committee has been judiciously carrying out great improvements to the school grounds. The new concrete steps and entrance gates' for the boys .have now been completed, and” give an improved appearance to the grounds. It is proposed to con- - tinue the post and wire netting fence ■ from the main entrance to the other ‘ side of the new entrance, and as soon as this is completed flower beds will be made, similar to the drill shied side, along by the tennis courts. Permanent seats have been made and placed in convenient places’ around tlie school grounds. At the rear jf the boys' playground a large, portion of the bank has been cut aw.ay-and the ground levelled, and a, stone retaining wall has been built with steps cut to to allow access to the higher portion of the playground, which it is proposed to sand in the near fu- ? ture. The committee has other improveiaents to the grounds in hand, including the installation of patent conveniences in- the existing buildings, and also the erection of additional conveniences' for. the infants’ department. Pairents might do well to visit the schoolgrounds and see for themselves .the general improvements which the committee is carry-v ing out.
DRINKING BUBBLERS. One of the patent “En Hakore” drinking bubblers has been installed, and is working satisfactorily, and -it has been decided to purchase a further nine and have them installed in various parts of the playground, the . total, cost p« which’will-be about £2OSCHOOL PICNIC. - . Arrangements for the annual picpic were left in the hands of the .headmaster. The picnic will probably be held towards the end Of February. PROFICIENCY EXAMINATIONS. . A vote of thanks and appreciation was accorded the headmaster and -hisstaff for their efforts and the success .achieved by the pupils at the recent Proficiency Certificate examinations. PRESENTATION OF CABINET. In connection with the handsome silver cup won by the primary school at the Waikato V(inter Show for root crops Mr C. Pascoe, on behalf of the committee, made and presented to the headmaster, on behalf of the chydren, a handsome cabinet of rimu, glass panelled and surmounted with the » letters P.D.H.S., to hold the cup won. In making the presentation Mr Pascoe said it was the wish v of the committee,, that the cabinet be presented as a slight token of appreciation of . the success gained by the pupils. Mr G. H. Taylor, the headmaster, in accepting tfie presentation on behalf of the school, thanked the committee for, their gift, and assured them' that the cabinet would certainly be very much treasured by his school, and he would have very much pleasure in handing it to the children and would convey the kind and appreciative wishes expressed. The headmaster was authorised to obtain a silver shield suitably inscribed to be placed on the cabinet. SYMPATHY AND CONDOLENCES A motion of condolence was passed .1 with the relatives of the late Mr-J.■ S. Bond, a member of the Auckland Education Board for many years. . A vote c\f sympathy was’ passed to Mr A. J. Garry on account of- the serious illness of his wife, and. wishes were expressed that she would speed- . ily be restored to health. i ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the. amount of £52 were passed for payment. _ • ' Complinientajry referenegs and the season’s greetings were exchanged.. , between the chairman, committee, headmaster, .and his staff. FUTURE MEETING. It was decided that the next committee meeting be held on the second Saturday in February. ,'
