MANUAL TRAINING SCHOOL.

LETTER FROM EDUCATION BOARD

With, regard to the proposed manual training school for. Paerjoa the Hon. Minister for Education has written co the Pacroa School Committee advis, ing that he would do all he could in the matter, and that he was at present awaiting a revised estimate from the Education Board as to the cost of the removal of the old Mackaytown school for the purpose. The Committe has on various occasions pointed out to the Education Department, Board, and Minister for Education the undesirability and many disadvantages of children travelling from Paeroa to Thames once a fortnight .especially during tne winter months for the purpose of receiving manual training Instruction, and urging on the authorities the pressing need for the immediate establishment of a manual training school in Paeroa. At Saturday evening’s meeting the committee received a copy of a letter from the Superintendent of Technical Education to the Educafon Board in which it was suggested, inter alia, that arrangements might be made whereby the whole of the manual training of children from the Paeroa District High School could be done during the summer and autumn months, so as to avoid travelling during the winter and spring. The following resolution was passed by the. Committee, and has been forwarded to the Board: “That this Committee strongly objects'and is entirely opposed to the children travelling to Thames for the purpose of receiving, manual training during the summer and autumn months.”

It has to be considered that if the director’s suggestion is given effect to it would simply mean that the children concerned would have to undergo the strain and wear and tear ahd extra expense of travelling to Thames once a week at least within the sum mer and autumn months.
