SOLAR ECLIPSE.

LOCAL OBSERVATIONS The clearness Of last evening allowed a splendid view of the eclipse that took place to be obtained. It is a great pity that the sun set before the phenomenon reached its maximum, at which period it must have been comparatively close to a total eclipse. As the moon crept up the face of the sun, when seen through a fairly powerful telescope it presented a very interesting sight, the dark edge of the minor body showing up very distinctly, and the irregularities of this edge caused by the mountainous nature of the moon’s surface were plainly visible. It is most interesting to thipk it is possible for astronomers to calculate the precise time when the moon will pass between the earth and the sun, and s'o cause the strange and beautiful sight that was witnessed last evening; Incidentally, it may be mentioned that, a distinct sun-spot was telescopically visable in the lower lefthand quadrant of the sun. Many enthusiasts availed themselves of witnessing the phenomenon from the summit of Primrose Hill, ani teachers took the opportunity of instructing the High School children in a lesson in practical astronomy.
