OBITUARY.

MR. J. S. HOPE. The death of, Mr J.. S. Hope at his residence, Grange Road, Mt. Eden, Auckland, removes a colonist of, sixty years in New Zealand, and alsp one of the hardy band of miners who were early on various goldfields and in Paeroa. Mr Hope was born at Glasgow 77 years ago, went to Australia, and then came to New Zealand, being amongst those who took part in the rush to Gabriel’s Gully, Otago. Later he resided at Napier and Hawke’s Bay, joining the Colonial Defence Force at bhe latter place. He was amongst the early arrivals O'l Thames goldfields, and was later on the staff at the old “Big Pump." was afterwards on batteries at Waihi and Waitpkauri, and in a carrying business between Paeroa, Waihi, Walking and Waitekauri. Deceased had many friends in this district, and was a member of the Ohiniemuri Royal Arcih Chapter, and also the Lodge Ohinemuri, 107. For the past few years he has been a director ofi Gilletts Motors, Ltd. At one time he ran a motor service between Devonport and Takapuna. Mr Hope was a member of the Grand Lodge bf Freemasons, N-ZC-, and was Senior Grand Deacon in 1920. He also belonged to the Grand Chapter of the Royal, Arch. Deceased is survived by .his wife, one son, and two daughters.
