FARMERS’ UNION.
NGATEA BRANCH. A meeting of the Ngatea branch of the N Z. Farmers’ Union was held in the Ngatea Public Hall on Saturday, Mr W. G. Hayward presiding. Mr W. McDuff reported on the deputation which had waited on the County Council with reference to the Kirikiri bridge. He thought te deputation was satisfied with the council’s decision to make all bridges county matters. ■ A parcel of hand-books on “Pigs and their management," by Mr K. W. Garringc. instructor of swine, husbandry', was received' and the books distributed among the members present. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Gorringe for sending the books. The chairman reported having sent a telegram tp Mr T. W. Rhodes, M P., to have the metalling of the Orchard East Rbad completed while the tramlines were down. Mr Rihodes had replied as follows: “With view completion Orchard East Road metalling, the Minister of Public Works agreed, subject to ratification by Cabinet, to provide £1450 if tihe County Council does likewise the work to be carried out by the Drainage Department.” The secretary (Mr C. W. Shultz) reported having been asked to also send a telegram. He did this. Another member reported that all the settlers along the road had also sent telegrams on the same day. The chairman asked if the branch would be prepared to move in the matter of obtaining a recreation ground. There was no ground at present available on whichi to play tne many football matches and have other sports. Mr McDuff suggested that a piece of ground next to the saleyards may be obtained. The chairman thought it best to get a ground with right of purchase. If the Farmers’ Union did not take the matter in hand there was no other body that would. Mr Clare said there was a. section of about, eight or ten acres near the factory which mpy be suitable. Some of the members thought it. unfair that some of the smallen townships on the Plains could get domains given to them by the Government and. that Ngatea was unable to secure such a gift. The president (Mr Hayward) was deputed to meet Mr Quanrie (junr.) to make satisfactory arrangements 'or the use of a paddock'. It was also decided to ask Mr Hayward and the owners of the site near the factory for prices of tihle properties under consideration.
