COMMUNITY SINGING

“CHEER GERM A-&LOWINGW It is very evident frpm the large number that rolled up to the sing oil Wednesday night that there is no slackening of interest. The singing on Wednesday was good and hearty, the assembly, under the baton of Mr p, C. Furley, taking up the various songs with a. vim and spirit that made the nigiht all too short. The new song-book issued by the committee has met with general favour. In all, it contains some 78 songs, an l the selection is good. With the exception of one or two favourites quite a new set of songs were so.’g, and it is surprising how soon the airs are taken up. Mr Darbyshire sang "Peggy O’Neil” in his. usual well known style and was heartily applauded. Mr W. H. Taylor made a capable chairman, and expained the objects of community singing. He announced that another sing-song would be held on Tuesday evening next, and ihe hoped to see the “chear germ" spread. The following songs were taken, commencing with three verses of “God Save the King""• “Cheer germ,” “Pack up your troubles,” “Camptown races,” “Long, long trail a .winding,” "Short, short life.” “Three Cheers for tihe Red, White, and Blue,” “Mother Machree," “Yip I-addy I-ay,” “Lassie from Lancashire," "Grasshopper,” “Poor, old Joe,” “One more Ribber,” “Come t*.: the Fair,” “My ain Folk," and “Auld Lang Syne.”
