THE TRUTH ABOUT COWS
LEARNT ON A FARM. Some time ago a schoolmaster asked his pupils to write an essay about cows. Here is the effort of; a farmer’s son : "A. cow is a nobull and kine-hearted creature. The man who looks after the cows is called a cowherd, but no is no coward that looks after, the cows. Cows have a regatta. every year, yet the cow is not a nautical animal. It is not true that she steei s with ihe,- udder. It is reported that the cow sat at the head of the table in the Ark (so say ark,-cow ologists) because she was the only animal that could calve- Cows rarely ride in carriages, but a fine calf has ir.equently been seen discend’ng from a tram-car. Cows exist by means of ox-ygen in tihe atmosphere. By the cow is the milk made. I know this is true, because I have seen the milk maid by the cow. The cow has been introduced into song. There is an old song called 'The Soldier’s Steers.’ This was written in beef flat, as also was that very pathetic ballad ‘For heifer and heifer.’ A cow does not carry an an argument very obstinately; it will soon give whey. The cows chew the cud. The dairyman will sometimes choose to cuddle the dairy maid. Cows seem to dp pretty well, for even at death they generally make both ends meat.”
