Though the weather early in the evening did not augur well for the success of Ngatea’s second community sing there was nevertheless a fair number present, A large number from Kerepeehi helped to swell the audience. Rev. R. G. Hemmings was chairman, and the singing was conductd by Mr C. W. Shultz. The’ sing was by no means a tame affair and was enlivened by spirited competition between the Kerepeehi representatives and the Ngateaites. The Kerepeehi people, though in the minority, sang lustily and well, and the conductor was forced tp admit that Kerepeehi " won on points.” The whistling of “Killarney” by the men was, on the high notes, ear-piercing, so the ladies were asked to do their best at it, and it was remarkable the volume of “ whistle ” a numbers of the ladies were able tp procure.
The singing was Interspersed with solos from the following: Mesdames Twist (Kerepeehi), R. Bratlie, Messrs Hobin. Hendren, and Shultz. Mr and Mrs Hendron gave a duet, while another item was given by a trio from Kerepeehi comprising Mrs Chatfield, Miss Chatfield and Mr Chatfield (junr.). Misses Kelly and Norris and Mr W. Tanner obliged with recitations, the last mentioned giving a clever impersonation of a well known' local identity. Miss R. Hilford played the accompaniments.
