TURUA’S ROADS.
NORTHERN AREA S WANTS. PETITION FOR SMALL LOAN. At the meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council on Monday Mr G. Gray presented a petition from the ratepayers in the northern area of the Turua riding for a sum of £lOOO to be raised for metalling the TuruaOpani Road, on which there is a Government grant of £B5O. The Council was asked to lift this grant, together with the £lOOO. to be raised, and especially that the whole sum (£1850) be spent entirely in broken metal. In carrying out that work the Counc 1 was asked to lay 15 chains of the road from the northern area into the Town Board area. Mr Gray said the ratepayers were unanimous. They wished the Council to obtain the money by requisition instead of taking a poll. Cr. Mayn said the Council should assist the settlers in raising this loan. He thought all the progress of the County was coming from Turua, an I congratulated them on their enterprise. He moved that the Council arrange all formalities in .this respect. Cr. Death seconded, and the motion was carried. Mr Gray said the settlers were quite prepared to take the Thams Borough Council broken metal. The chairman said the Council was ready to spend all available money. Mr Gray considered the Council should spend a little of its money in that area. Mr Walton (clerk): They should pay their rates. Mr Gray: Surely spine of the rates have been paid. Mr Walton : Very little. Cr. McLoughlin moved and Cr. Chatfield seconded that the engineer and the members for the riding inspect the road, with power to act. The motion w.as carried. The engineer said, regarding the cost, he could give an estimate immediately, as he had already been over the road. Mr Gray said there were parts of the ipad in a good condition, but requiied levelling. The engineer estimated that the cost would be about £l7OO. Mr Gray: The ratepayers have decided to rate themselves With £lOOO and ask you to do it.
