REPATRIATION.

A PROGRESS RETURN. The Repatriation Department has issued the following return as at July 20 : The Department has placed 28,033 discharged soldiers in employment, and there are at the present time 278 names on the “Employment Wanted" Register (Auckland 81, Wellington 84', Canterbury 81, Otago 32). In addition to 1427 students who have been assisted financially with grants for the payment of, fees and the purchase of text-books the Department has arranged vocational training for 6064 partially disabled soldiers, apprentices, etc., and 5795 of this number have completed their course's and have been absorbed in various industries; During the month of July eight men commenced training, and 60 trainees completed their courses. There are 269 men still being Gained, viz., 178 subsidised workers and apprentices in private workshops or factories, 43 .trainees at Ruakura and Tauherenikau Training Farms, etc., and 48 others ateuniversities, etc. The total amount expended to date on the provision of) facilities for training and for the sustenance of trainees is £390,134. Loans to assist discharged soldiers to establish themselves in businesses or professions have been granted m 6239 cases, at a cost of £1,138,684. A further 15,047 men have received advances totalling £71'5,282 for the purchase of household furniture or tobls-of;-trade ,and 4444 have been granted financial assistance in other directions, the amount paid to or on behalf of soldiers under aB headings being £2,257,24'8. Of rne total amount of £2,257,248 expended on behalf of soldiers £1,830,897 represents loan advances for the establishment of businesses or for the purchase ofj household furniture, etc., and up to June 30 last the Department had collected in respect thereof £1,032,092. •
