BOROUGH COUNCIL.

THE AUGUST MEETING.

The usual monthly meeting of the above council was held on Wednesday night, when the fallowing were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr P. E. Brenan), and Crs. Vuglar, Marshall, Lamb, . Bain, Edwards, and Flatt. Apologies were received from Cr. Leach, and also from, the newly-elect-ed Cr. J. Silcock. CRITERION BRIDGE. Mr F. W. Furkert, Engineer-in-Chief and Under-Secretary, wrote acknowledging receipt of the Council’s fetter in reference to the condition of the Criterion bridge, and stated he was glad that the Council had been assured there was no structural weakness in the bridge. He also stated that he did not quite understand the Council’s reference to the new bridge, but presumed that if one is built it will be on the same site.. — Received. A councillor remarked that the letter was of a very different tone to the last one received from Mr Furkertu CONTRIBUTION TO IMPROVEI- - WORKS. The Secretary of the Treasury forwarded a statement in connection with the Ohinemuri and Waiihou Rivers Improvement, and stated that an additional contribution of £1 7s was required, which would be deducted from the next, gold duty payable.—Received. £3OOO LOAN. The State Advances Office wrpte advising that a further amount of £3OOO had been paid to the Council’s credit on account of loan moneys. DRAINAGE CONTRACT. Anchor and Co. wrote stating that they had finished the contract witn the exception of one or two small items. COMPLAINT. Mr Lockle Gannon reported that he had invstigated the complaint made by Mr W. Barclay, and stated that he failed to see any damage further than could be expected in putting a drainage scheme through the property. In fact, in the case complained of, no damage had been done further than cutting some trees which were in the line and had to be cut. It was decided that Mr Barclay be informed of the report received. ■ CORBETT STREET-STATION ROAD AREA. Mr Lockie Gannon wrote advising that they were pushing along with the pians of the Corbett Street-Station Road drainage area.. SEWERAGE CONTRACT. Cr. Marhsall moved that the engineers be requested to expedite the flushing of the sewers and all necessary arrangements far the (septic system to be put into commission, and to inform the Council as early as possible the approximate date of such completion. On receipt of the information notification to be made to the public through the press. Seconded by Cr. Edwards and carried. INCREASE IN SALARY.

An application for an increase in salary was received from the ranger and it was passed on to the finance committee foi" a report. CORBETT STREET PATH. The application of the Salvation Arm?' to have a few loads of gravel on the path in front of the barracks was referred to the works committee to be attended to. LEASE OF PRIMROSE HILL. On the motion of Cr. Edwards, Mr J. Walls’ application for the lease of. the domain hill was granted at the renta.' of £lB per annum, the board to replace the w,ater trough and be responsible for the removal of a’l noxious weeks. The lease to be granted subject to the lease being signed. This was seconded by Cr. Marshall. Cr. Flatt took strong exception to the resolution, and contended that there was no signed application; further, be considered that Mr Walls had fulfilled the terms of the previous leases to the satisfaction of the board. After some informal talk on the matter the motion was carried, Cr. Flatt voting against the proposal.
