COMMITTEE REPOSTS The following reports were submitted to the Paeroa Borough Council meeting on Wednesday night:' BUILDING COMMITTEE. Your Committee begs to report that several applications for building permits have been received during the rtionth, as follows: W. Denton, application for permit to erect a stable; J. Pinder, application for permit to add room to his house; Hayward Bros., application for permit to erect verandah on house owped by Mr le Cocq • R- I. Roberts, application for permit to erect house for Mrs Hargreaves, Thames Road ; R. I. Roberts, application for permit to erect house for Mr Tai boys. With the exception of W. Denton's application we recommend that they be granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws. In the case of Mr Denton’s application we recommend that applicant be asked to submit a sketch showing the site for the proposed stable, as the locality is a congested one. Granted, subject to compliance with the by-laws. WORKS COMMITTEE. Your Committee begs to report that during the past month the staff have been engaged on the various works authorised by the Council. Particulars of the completed works are contained in the foreman’s report Your Committee understands that the Tirohia quarry has closed down for a period of two months, and this 'nformation is correct new arrangements will have to be made to secure metal supplies. No difficulty should be experienced in Obtaining supplies for footpaths, though road metal of a suitable quality .will be hard to obtain.
Your Committee has inspected the area of land purchased some time ago to effect a junction between Arney Street and Bennett Street, and is of the opinion that it would be advantageous to form up this portion and cut a track to the junction of Nahum Street and Bennett Street, whica could be used for driving cattit eo the pound, and obviate the necessity of passing the High School with cattle. This work is estimated by .the foreman to cost £25, and we recommend the work being done. We also recommend that the foreman be instructed to erect a cattle-stop on the Bennett Street bridge for the purpose of preventing the footpath being used by cattle. The cost would be about £l.
Re Beautifying Society’s application to remove soil from Normahby Road path: Arrangements will, have to be made with the property owner to shift the fence back to a proper line to enable sufficient batter for the bank. As soon as the owner ip question has given his consent to tho arrangement we recommend that the Society be given the necessary permission. FINANCE COMMITTEE. Your Committee begs to report that during the month the revenue amounted to £396 9s 7d and expenditure to £l6l 3s 6d. Including the attached accounts, which your Committee recomend for payment, the balance on the District Fund account will amount to £454 19s Id.
R'e Sewerage Loan moneys: Advice has been received from the State Advances superintendent that £3OOO was being remitted. This will no doubt arrive during the present week, -i A number of! summonses have been issued during the month in respect of outstanding rates. FOREMAN’S REPORT.
I have to report that the work for the past month has included repairing, patching, and general work. Rennett Street, Tnames Road, and Norma nby Road have been repaired .and screenings spread where urgently needed. Russell Street path has been reformed and screenings put on Culen Street path, and Hill Street and. Moore Street have been similarly treated.
The old fence in Anzac Avenue has been taken down and a new pn'i erected on the proper boundary, an.l the footpath has been formed up to the dra'n. I expect to have tjie bridge removed to the correct place in a few days.
I have had some small drains cleaned out that were in a bad state, including the drains in Albert Street, Willoughby Street, Hill Street, - atul Hughendon Street. With the small amount of metal received during the month I have patched Seymour Street, Belniont Road, and part of Normanby Road. Only five trucks of screenings and four of metal have come to hand lithe past month*. I have been asked to report on tnc water consumed at the brewery, and have to say that as a result of mv Observations during the past six months, I am of the opinion that about two-thirds of the amount is now being consumed compared w'th that consumed .when the borough took over the water from the County Council. The reason that a big reduction in the amount of water consumed has taken place is that the use of the Pelton wheel has been discontinued and an oil engine installed. The crossing from Thames Road to Bennett Street and the clearing of a track 20 feet wide to Nahum Street would cost about £25.
A contract has been let far cleans ing Whitmore’s drain from Puke Road to the river, and work is in progress. The proposed work for ’.he ensuing month is reforming William Street path from Belmont Road to Corbett Street, stone wall in Rye Lane, Arney Street path, and metalling Bush Street,
