PLAINS WATER SUPPLY.
Sir—-I read with much interest the letter of a Patetonga farmer in a recent issue in which he urged the Hauraki Plains County Council ’o more in the matter oft a water supply scheme for the Plains. I have discussed the proposal with many farmers in the Awaiti district, and witnout exception all are agreed that water is essential for us, and there is a strong feeling that tjie Council should get to work at once and not delay the urgept matter. Up to re cently we had always looked to the Waitawheta Stream as the source of supply, but. the Government estimate for that scheme put it in the remote future before it could become a possibility. The idea of Messrs Gannon and Worley to tap the stream from the western ranges appears to us to be thoroughly sound, and should bring the question of a water supply within reasonable limits. We understand from Press reports of recent Council meetings that these engineers are prepared to investigate every possible source' of supply with reports, recommendations, and estimates, free of cost to the Council, provided that when the work is proceeded with it is carried out under their expert supervision. Now, sir, by ap-point-ng them to make these investigations it appears to us that the Council are not placing themselves under any immediate liability, and the final decision will then rest with the ratepayers as to whether the Plains is to have a water supply or not: And we in this district consider that the ratepayers should have the chance of deciding a question of such vital importance to us all. AWAITI.
