Barlow. NOTES FROM THE PLAINS. SIDE-LINE JOTTINGS,. Individual efforts, more than combined team work, were predominant in Saturday’s trial matches at Ngatea. What little passing was seen was indiscriminate and faulty, ahd there was also a tendency to hang on to the ball too long. Play was fast enough in a way, but the bright, interesting passing rushes were few and far between.. Some of the individual efforts were good, and if these, with the addition of good combined work, are displayed by the Plains representatives next Saturday a very creditable performance should be given. The junior trial match was more interesting to watch than the senior game—a fact which, though creditable to the younger players, should act as an incentive to the older men. • •

rhe picking of the Plains representatives was no eSsy task. Wlhile some players were regarded as certainties for certain positions, there was difficulty in the discrimination of others, and the advisory board was by nc means unanimous on all the recommendations to the selectors. However, the teams selected to meet Piako in the first round for the Frank Poland Memorial Cup and the Sharebrokers’ Cup should mee* with the general- approval-of the Plains footballers

To mark .the entry of the Hauraki Plain:-. Rugby Union into representative competitions a souvenir programme is being, issued for Saturday’s match at Ngatea. Are the rudiments of the game sufficiently grounded in -our players ? This question was recently asked by an Auckland authority. Perhaps it would not be be out of place to ask the same question of the local players. That, authority feai’s that in Auckland it is not the case. That contention may also be correct here. Those aspiring to first-class honours should, be he a forward, know how to scrum, tackle, and pass a ball, for the play of the present calls more than ever for these three essentials. All forwards are naturally expected

to have a knowledge of scrummage work, but their duty does not end there. The game has been brighten-; ed and brains are more essential/ than br.awn. Forwards of to-day are not expected to carry on By oxstrength. The play calls fqr initiative, especially as regards tackling and passing. The more open game calls forth, stamina and more'speed than of yore. There is absolutely no reason why a forward should not be as efficient as a back in the matter of coParing and passing. "Wiey are two arts that should be cultivated by the vanguard. Club captains should impress these facts on their players, and with due regard to combination the game can be made thrilling.
