At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council Cr. Marshall took exception to some remarks made by his fellow councillors and tendered his resignation as. a member of the building committee. After a little “hot air” had been freely exchanged and apologies tendered Cr. Marshall somewhat reluctantly consented to withdraw his resignation. An auction sale of oak furniture is to take place to-morrow afternoon at the residence of Mr Avey, Hill Street, Paeroa. Messrs Parker and Marks will conduct the sale, particulars of which are advertised. Although, the Borough Council meeting was called for 7.30 last evening it was nearly an hour late in starting, due to the want of a quorum. The arrival of the train from Hamilton with some of the sporting members of the council aboard gave the council a full attendance. Evidence enough, that the low price of butter-fat is becoming a serious matter for the farmer is that many settlers all over the Hauraki Plains are forced to seek other employment to enable them to keep their farms. A large number has accepted jobs from the Government departments, doing either draining or rohd work, The funeral of the late Thomas Hargreaves took place on Wednesday afternoon, when a large number of friends attended to pay their last tribute to the (deceased.' A service, conducted by the Rev. Dobson, was held at St. Paul’s Church prior to leaving for the cemetery. The de ceased, who took a keen interest >n the Manchefeter Unity Order of l Oddfellows’ Friendly Society? and was a Past Grand of the Order, was accorded an Oddfellow’s burial, the pall bearers being Past Grands Brothers W. D. Nicholas, Powell, R. I. Roberts, C. Gwilliam, O. Overall, and R. Phillips, the last sad rites of the Order being read by P.G. Permanent Secretary Bro. W. North.
Notice is given by the Thames Borough Council that application for licenses to drive motor-cars for hire oh race days must be made not later than Tuesday next. A dairy farm of 200 acres in Tara-i naki is burdened with the following mortgages: First, £3300-, second. £B4OO ; third, £1948 ; fourth, £3751 ; fifth, £2763—a1l at 5% per cent, interest. It ,is stated that there is a possibility of the land realising sufficient to pay the first and second mortgages. During a debate at Ngatea last evening ’on “Is ■ the World Growing, Better ?” a speaker instanced the fact that a grant of about £l2OO was being made for a police station .on the Hau - raki Plains, but no money was forthcoming for the enlargement of /schools. The rapid growth of gorse on the Domain Hill was brought before the Borough Council again last night. The matter of getting this noxious' weed eradicated was assigned to the domain committee.’ with power to act. When a permit for/a building to cost £7 10s was being discussed last night by the Borough Council Cr. Marshall contended that a 10s fee for this permit was- unreasonable, and the matter was referred to the committee to look into. ' J. Curtin, practical boot repairer, announces that he has, commenced business in the shop adjoining the Commercial Hotel.
