HARBOUR COMMISSION.
REPORT DISCUSSED.
BY THAMES COUNTY COUNCIL.
Commenting at a Council meeting on Wednesday on the report of the Thames Harbour Commission, Mr H. T. G. McElroy, clerk of the Thames County Council, said that under the proposed conditions, wherein “Thames and Hauraki Plains would be entitled to two members,” it- would be likely that Hauraki Plains, with its greater voting strength, would be able to elect the two members. An alteration should be made' to the effect that Thames should have one member and Hauraki Plains one member.
The chairman (Mr Henry Lowe) said the suggested representation was not equitable, seeing that Thames would pay proportionately four times the amount that other areas would No doubt Thames’, having direct road, railway, and water communication, wbuld get the greater benefit from the harbour; this the Commission had taken into consideration in making its allocations. ■
Mr Lowe added that on a valuation basis the Plains might not be getting undue representation after all.
