Waikino weekly half-holiday was discussed at Wednesday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council. Cr. P. Grace thought the business people would prefer Saturday, but Cr.., S., H. Morgan said he had ascertained that, possibly .with one exception, the shop-* keepers favoured the present day, Wednesday. The Council decided to take no action in the matter, leaving it to the Minister of Labour to declare the day, which, in accordance with precedent, he would probably declare to allow the present day unaltered, and thus Wednesday would be the half-holiday for the next year. Opinions are being freely expressed by ratepayers in the Hauraki Plains County that the Council should not have gone into committee when the dispute with the engineer arose, after certain adverse criticisms were made by Cr. G. Death. It is considered tha; the action of going into committee was not fair either to the Council or the engineer. One ratepayer remarked that councillors should not make statements they were not prepared to stand by openly, and that the press could always be relied upon not io publish matter that would be highly indiscreet without, doing any good. Going into committee on the part, of any local body meant that the public, or shareholders, whom the members were in office to represent, were refused full and prompt information in regard to their own business.
