QUEEN CARNIVAL.

RESULTS! ANNOUNCED. / WIN FOR HIKUTAIA. y The results of St. Mary’s Church and Convent Queen Carnival were announced during the course of a social function in .the Central Theatre last night, Mr P. E. Bren.an presiding (in his capacity as a private citizen, and not as Maydr). Messrs J. T. Brown, G. H. Taylor, A. R. Robinson, and M. Smith conducted'the counts. ■■■ The following were the queens: Farmers’ Queen, Molly, Budd; Hikutaia Queen, Mary Ellis; Sports Queen, Norma Car,thy; Karangahake Queen, Birdie Tucker. There was -some excitement during the voting for the various. queens, each threepence contributed counting as one vote. Cheques, bags of, silver, and rolls of notes kept pouring in to support the various queens, the rivalry between the Fapafers’ and the Hikutaia aspirants for “royal” honours being tremendously keen. The following are the final results:

Grand total — __ £766 10 3 There were nine prizes in the Grand Art Union, most of the winners being people of places a long way from Paeroa: First, A. Cputts, Inkerman Street, Onehunga ; second, Miss E. Ha.hunga, Waiwera House, Rotorua ; third, Mrs E. Fitzgerald, "Burwood,” Matamata. There were numerous other results announced, particulars of which will probably be officially announced in the usual way aifter the official recount. The Rev. Father Dunphy expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the people of all denominations who had assisted in the campaign. In a town and district where all denominations cooperated so generously there was a fine spirit, a place for the civic welfare of which he could wholeheartedly work. Mr M. A. EUis also returned thanks, and Mr Matt Smith congratulated Hikutaia on its win.
