THAMES BAND CONTEST
The Thames people are showing a considerable amount of interest in their Band Contest, which commenced, on Wednesday evening with the euphonium solos. The Whakatane band, frhich arrived on Monday evening, was the first to invade .the town, and was welcomed by the Thames band. On Tuesday morning the Whakatane band played the New Plymouth band ,to their quarters, and ihe ,Taranakites did likewise to the Dannevirke and Te Aroha bands the same evening. On each occasion large crowds assembled to welcome the visitors. The Hamilton and Auckland bands arrived. It is rumoured that three bands arc unajble to make the> trip, reducing the number of contestants to eight. The test<pieces are ; Selection, “The Valkyrie” : . march, “The . Commonwealth” ; hymn, "Eternal Father.” The townspeople are exhibiting a liberal display of bunting during the day, while part of the main street is illuminated with coloured electric lights by night.
