DISTRICT NEWS.

(“Gazette” Staff Reporter.) TURUA. FACTORY IMPROVEMENTS. The recent improvements to the Huirau Road factory have greatly facilitated work there, and the suppliers do not require to wait as long on their daily visit to the factory. It is estimated that an hour’s wait is saved the suppliers. CHURCH BAZAAR. The date for the annual bazaar of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Churcli has been fixed for November 25. Subcommittees at Ngatea, Wharepoa, and Kopuarahi are reported to be working well, while other sub-committees may possibly be formed. LIBRARY. The Turua people appear to be taking full- advantage of the facilities offered by their library. There is, a good supply of books, and the librarian, Mr J.. Gibson, is kept quite busy during the evenings when the library is open, SCHOOL , COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the Turua School Committee was held in the schoolhouse on Monday night. In the absence of the chairman (Mr R. Miller) Mr W. Madgwick occupied the chair, and in the absence of the secretary (Mr C. Farley) Mr J. McConnell took the minutes. The headmaster, Mr J. L. Brownlee, reported that there was a sumi of £1? 6S 6d in hand from the recent picture entertainment for the school ground' improvement fund, but the account for printing, had yet to be paid out of that amount. A letter from the Auckland Education Board requested information regarding money to be spent on ground improvements, flag-statf, school garden, and the school library. The estimated cost of the ground improvements as submitted to the meeting was £59 lis 6d. The headmaster’s report showed that the number of pupils admitted to the school during the month was nine, and the number withdrawn two. There were 170 pupils on the roll. The average attendance for the month was 146.8, and the average for the quarter 136.2. The school had been very satisfactorily scrubbed and sanitary work carried out during last week’s vacation. Leave of absence was granted to Miss I. A'- Sailings (pupil teacher) for a fortnight, owing to illness. A resignation was received from Miss E. H. Prive (assistant teacher), to take effect at the end of the month. Mr S. Williams complained of wandering cattle, some of which were bulls, which were allowed freedom of the roads. He contended that the children on their way to school were

in danger, having to pass these beasts. It was decided to write to the Hauraki Plains County Council, asking it to remedy this matter,. Mr C. Dale suggested that a schoolmaster’s, residence should' be provided, and the meeting came to a decision to communicate with the board with regard .to the matter. Mr Madgwick thought it a pity that a school withi 170 pupils on the roll should not have a teacher’s residence. The headmaster reported that the committee had previously applied for an extension being made ,to the school, and while the school inspector was in Turua a short time back he had put the matter before that official, who had promised his support.
