Although 92 years of age, the oldest resident of Paeroa, Mrs John Mahony aunt of Mrs Crosby, of the Paeroa Hotel, has vivid recollections of Life in the early days. When her late husband, in company with Mr A. Cassrels, first came to Paeroa, the Maori chieftainess did not view the white strangers with favour, and promptly threw their few belongings into the river. They were not allowed to live in Paeroa, and, therefore took up their abode at the Puke, travelling up the river and over the hills to Waitekauri when the gold rush came. Luckily the Peace of Hauraki, made with -the natives by the famous warden, the late Mr Jas. Mackay whose historical notes were recently published in the “.Gazette,” gave life on the Goldfields absolute security as far as the natives were concerned.

This week’s issue of the “Sporting and Dramatic Review” has an abundance of illustrations that will commend it to the general public. Events depicted are the Inter-provincial Rugby Football match between Southland and Hawkes Bay, the Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting, the Avondale Jockey Club’s spring meeting, and the Ladies’ Hockey Tournament at Palmerston North. The Cowes Regatta in England is the subject of a specially attractive series, and a frontispiece of Mischa Levitzki makes up an excellent publication.
