THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1921. LOCAL MAIL SERVICES.

There is very obviously keen rivalry between Thames and Pae_roa for the contract for the mail tenders for the Hauraki Plains centres, and it seems that undue pressure is being brought to bear to influence the Postal Department in the matter. Thames is battling for the retention of the delivery from that end, which necessitates the use of train, tidal river, and motor service or other vehicle, while Paeroa desires direct service by motor from the railway junction of Paeroa, to and from the Plains. Seeing that this rivalry exists, it is likely that “influence” will play some part in the decision, which is a very undesirable feature. In order that the position shall be reviewed on its merits, it is necessary that an official from the Chief Post Office, Wellington, should visit the district and make first-hand investigation into the pros and cons of the rival routes, otherwise the scheme adopted is likely to prove as unsatisfactory to the residents of the Plains and Paeroa as it has been in the past—and this is saying a good deal. The subject is one which the Paeroa Chamber of Cofnmerce and the Paerna Businessmen’s Association might well take in hand and make vigorous representations upon, if there is any truth in certain rumours which are being freely circulated in the district.
