TE HOE. (Own Correspondent.) A meeting of settlers concerned in the drainage of the swamps, through which the Mangawara river flows, was held in the Te Hoe hall on Monday 24th inst. Mr Hanna was voted to the chair. Mr Tudehope, solicitor of Hamilton, who was present, explained that the meeting was called to consider a report made by Mr Thompson Govt. Engineer on the proposed Paranui Drainage Board. This Board was to have been formed to control the drainage of the upper reaches of the Mangawara stream. The report on this scheme was not favourable, the engineer'considering that the area included was to small, he recommended that a larger area be mapped out. After the various points raised in Mr Thompson’s report had been fully explained by the Chairman and Mr Tudehope, Mr Twining moved that a Drainage Board to be known as the Paranui Drainage Board, be formed in accordance with Mr Thompson’s report. This was seconded by Mr Eddowes and carried unanimously. The boundaries as fixed by the meeting are starting at the junction of the Tauhei and Mangawara streams on the Northern side, along the boundaries of Messrs Kneebone and Mac Adams properties to the Ohinewai-Tahuna road, thence along that road to Mrs Harrison and Stewarts properties at Te Hoe-o-Tainui, on the southern side of Mangawara, starting at the Tauhei Junction, along the Tauhei creek to the TaupiriOrini road, thence along that road to Procter's Road thence to and embracing Calder and Gerahty’s property, there taking in the Te Hoe-o-Tainui swamp to Harrison’s. Mr Hubbard in moving a vote of thanks to the chairman, stated that this was the second or third attempt to deal with the drainage of this district, and he trusted that this time they would be successful, and he moved a hearty vote thanks be accorded Mr Hanna for the able manner in which he had conducted the meeting. Seconded by Mr Twining and carried.
The present season is turning out a record one for the settlers, owing to the high prices and a plentiful supply of feed. The rain on Friday and Saturday, which just came in time, has done an immense amount of good to the turnip crops. Private C. Twining is home on final leave before proceeding to the front.
Sapper S. Phair, late secretary of the Te Hoe branch of the Farmers’ Union reports from Gallipoli that ho was at the time of writing doing well and and in the best health.
