Charge of Theft.

Messrs E. J. Farrell and W. Leather, J’s. P., sat at Huntly on January sth to hear a charge of theft brought against a former employee of the Railway Department. From the evidence submitted, it appeared that a passenger by the evening train on December 18th alighted at Huntly for a few moments, and on going back into his carriage when the train started for Frankton he found that his brief-bag, a book and a waterproof coat had disappeared. On asking his fellow passengers if they knew what had become of them, he was informed that a railwayman had come into the carriage at Huntly and removed them. A description of the man being obtained, particulars were communicated to the Huntly Police, and a search being made at the accused’s place of residence, the missing articles were found, and the man arrested. Accused pleaded guilty. After hearing the evidence, the Justices intimated that, as accused had lost his position in the railway service, and had a wife and six children dependent on him, he had been sufficently punished. They therefore recorded a conviction, and ordered accused to come up for sentence when called upon. The property, which had been recovered by the Police, was handed to its rightful owner.
