RUAWARO. (Own Correspondent.) A meeting of the Huntly West branch of the Farmer’s Union was held in the Pukemiro School, on Saturday, April 24th at 8 p.m. There was a large attendance of members. After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read, the chairman ruled them incorrect. A long discussion, in which much feeling was shown, ended by the chairman giving way and confirming them. The election of officers for the current year took place, with the following results : —R. McEwan, chairman; E. Sefton, Vice-Chairmain; A. Caley, secretary and treasurer ; G. Farmer, auditor; P. Caley, W. Smith, J. H. Furniss, T. Sefton, C. C. Comins and C. Alder were appointed as an executive committee. Mr C. C. Comins was selected to represent the branch at the Provincial Conference to be held at Auckland in May next.
The petition prepared by Mr W. J. Ralph for a road to the new railway- station at Awaroa, was turned down, the wording being incorrect. It is intended to bring the matter up in a different form next meeting. Owing to several farmers, who are eligible to join the Union, having come to some of the meetings without doing so, it was decided that in the future, they- be allowed to attend one meeting, so that they may get an insight into the working of the branch. After which, they must join if they wish to attend again. Messrs Carlyon and Sefton were proposed and accepted as members. The next meeting of the branch will be held on Saturday-, May 29th at 8 p.m. WAIKOKOWAT. The first of the Euchre Parties and Dances of the season was held last Friday night, there being a fairly good attendance. The Euchre was keenly contested the prizes being won by Mr Herbert (Gents’), and Mrs Jamieson (Ladies’), while Mr Hart and Miss E. Leek gained the ” booby” prizes. Dancing was kept up till the “ wee sms' hours,” Mr Hart kindly supplying the music. There was a record attendance at Church on Sunday-, when the Rev. Richards preached. The settlers are making preparations for the *erection of the private telephone to Rotongaro, to connect with the Government ’phone from that Office to Huntly. Thera is every likelihood of the property of one of our oldest settlers changing hands in the near future.
Mr Tapp’s water-wheel is proving itself very efficient as far as chaff-cutting is concerned, and as the supply of water increases it will develope into a very profitable concern in various othet branches of farming industry. Mr T. Sefton has been successful in obtaining the contract for the ploughing of 1,009 acres of land. It is rumoured that the Village Reserve in this district is to be thrown open for settlement in about two months time. Mr Tapp is making great progress in the laying down of a new tennis lawn, the completion of which is eagerly looked forward to by the young people.
