The Holiday.

St. Patrick’s Day is becoming every year more and more of a general holiday, especially in the Waikato, and on Wednesday, very little business was done except in connection with the various sports gatherings that were held.

The morning broke fine but overcast, yet not threateniiig enough to !»g,d one to suppose that the day viould turn out wet. However by nooif, the pronostications of fine weather were seen to be doomed to prove to be false, and by two o’clock rain had set in in earnest. Great crowds of people had turned out in their summer garb to enjoy a good day’s outing, and at Ngaruawaliia many thousands had gathered to witnesss the Maori Regatta, there, or to see old friends, who made that place an annual rendeznous. Things went merrily enough until the rain came, and then a sudden transformation took place, and soon everybody and everything presented a very' bedraggled - appearance. A rush was made for shelter, but a great many people got well soaked before they could get under cover. Then came the weary wait until train time, and the no less weary and uncomfortable period of sitting packed in a stuffy carriage or a draughty truck during the return journey. Quite a lot of Huntlypeople took the wrong train and were carried on to Mercer and had to wait there and return by the evening train. It would be interesting to publish a record of the feelings of these unlucky people, but so far no one has come forward with any thing printable on the subject. Although the wet weather spoilt the holiday, it did not pi event the various events from being got off, and as usual, Huntly had its fair share of wins.
