THE HUNTLY PRESS. PUBLISHED WEEKLY AT 1 P.M. FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 1915. Great South Road as a Race Track.
Our attention has been drawn to the practice of some motorists of making use of the metalled road through Huntly as a kind of race track. Especially at the north end, it is no uncommon sight to see motor-cars and motor-bikes travelling at speeds up to and even exceeding 40 miles an hour. A motor car has been known to give the Wellington Express a hundred yards start and a beating within a mile and it is no uncommon sight to see a motor bike being tested by being raced backwards and forwards by its rider. Sooner or later an accident will occur and someone will be seriously injured. Of course, if it is the driver or rider of the motor, it will not matter so much, because he knows the danger, takes the risk and naturally i.s willing to abide by the consequences of his acts of folly. But there is the other man to be thought of, the one who is riding, driving or walking along the road in a perfectly legitimate manner, who may be severely injured or even killed by being run down by some of these reckless people. He would naturally have a claim against the motorist and we are convinced that, with the mass of evidence of furious driving which could be brought against certain of the more reckless ones, the Court would award very substantial damages. It may not be known to motorists but the Town Board has a speed limit of 10 miles an hour, and anyone exceeding this is liable to a penalty.
