; MONTHLY MEETING. T The usual monthly meeting of the Huntly Road Board was ~ held on Saturday the 19th. inst, a week earlier than usual, owing T to the holidays. There were present: — Messrs.a J. P. Bailey (Chairman,) L. B. , Harris Jr, R. T. Hill and W. F. Parker. j A grant of £950, £1 for £l, which had been placed on the Estimates for the repair of the , Taupiri Gorge Road, had been ( shown to be quite useless t > the Board, owing to its inability to l raise any amount to earn the _. subsidy. The Clerk reported havJ ing written to the Auckland Auj* tomobile Association, suggesting , that as they were more concerned * in the repair of the road than anyone else, and as they had at various times expressed a willingi ness to contribute to the repair of . the main arterial roods-, an ex- ! cellent opportunity hero present- ’ ed itself to improve one of the worst places on the Great South Road, by contributing what they thought fit, and thus enabling the Board to earn the Government Subsidy. The reply received . was net encouraging, the Secrete ry stating that it was not the policy of his Association to | assist in such circumstances and that they expected, if the Reform Party were returned to power that the repair of the Great South Road would be taken over by the Government. In a second letter they had a -ked for more information and ■ had promised to give the matter further consideration. ’ The Clerk was instructed to put iu hand the work of cutting down Russell’s Hill as soon as possible. An application for permission to lay a tramway across the Great South Road at the Pumice Works, was received from the Firth Pumice Company. As the application had been properly advertised and the plans deposited for inspection, and as no objections had been lodged, the Board decided to grant the application, the interests of the Board and the public at large being properly safeguarded in
