HUNTLY V. HAMILTON WANDERERS. r Huntly opened the season * with a match against Hamilton. Hamilton arrived minus two j. men, Marston and Brooks, of ' Huntly, operating in their places, ' whilst Harding was given a ! chance with the home team. ’ Mr Geo. Aspinall had charge of the following teams I HUNTLY. (Goal) Harvey, (Full Backs Hines and Brown, (Half Backs) ' Johnson, Young and Harding, (Forwards) Porteous, Webb, Douglas, Irving and Burt. HAMILTON. (Goal) Beaucham, (Full Backs Brooks and W. Allen, (HalfBacks) Barber, Marston and Jackson, (Forwards) Atkins, Foote, Dewar, Gubbins and J. Allen. THE GAME. Timms won the toss, but there was little or no advantage to be gained. The weather, indeed, was ideal for first-class football and a fast game was anticipated. Dewar started for Hamilton before a very moderate attendance. Hamilton immediately made play on the left, Timms checking J. Allen, and the ball eventually going outside. Loose play followed. At lastßurtgot away on the left, but after beating Brooks, J. Allen came to the rescue and cleared. The home men, however, came again on the right, but they were never really dangerous and Marston had little trouble in breaking up their poor attempts at combination. The first bit of interesting play came from the Huntly right wing. Young gained possession well up the field. He fed Irving who pushed the ball forward to Webb. Porteous was unmarked on the wing when Webb gave him the ball. The wing man ran along and centred right across the goal only to see Burt shoot weakly outside when favourably placed. Hamilton next got away on the right, but Brown was very safe and the ball was returned to the other end of the field. Johnson was slow and let in the Hamilton left wing, but after Timms had partially cleared, J. Allen was guilty of offside play and the danger was removed. Burt next forced a ( corner off Barber. Gubbins, the ] visiting inside left, after some j splendid footwork put Allen in possession and the left winger f banged in a hard ball which t Timms saved finely with his c head. Hamilton seemed bent on c n! vitic their left wine- with i

plying their left wing witti plenty of ball. Dewar from a neat pass by Marston fed Alien and the latter, with a left foot drive beat Harvey all the way— One up to Hamilton. On resuming play was con fined to midfield. The Huntly forwards had been giving a poor account of themselves, Burt being the exception. They appeared to have no control over the ball. Webb, however, got away a neat head pass to Porteous and on receiving again he tricked Jackson and cut on to Irving who shot high over the bar. The Huntly front line had several opportunities of scoring, but they hesitated and the chances were lost. Douglas in the centre was lying too far back instead of playing right on top of the backs. After Brown had checked the right wing Burt got clear away on his own, and running along at top speed, he sent in a hard drive which rebounded from the goal keeper’s hands to the feet of Douglas who should have scored, but he shot wildly over the bar. Hamilton were becoming dangerous on the left when half time was called. Hamilton 1 Huntly 0 Shortly after the recommencement, Webb, who had now taken the outside berth, forced a corner which came to nothing. There, from a foul against Marston, Timms shot straight into goal. The keeper fumbled and Irving seemed to have a chance, but was slow in getting to the ball and the danger was removed to the half way line. Brooks kicked away a low centre from the left. Huntly now re-arranged their foiward line, Burt coming into the centre position. From a scrummage in front of the Hamilton posts Burt drove in a hard ball which cannoned off a player’s boot and sailed high over the bar. Hamilton got away on the left, and Gubbins, after beating three or four men in good style, passed to Allen. The outside man centred at once but Dewar was palpably offside when he shot through. The referee allowed the point, however. Timms, with a huge punt, put the left wing in possession. Allen again got away on the visitors’ left, but was hampered by Timms, and the ball passed outside. The goal kick was badly taken by Harvey who kicked straight to Gubbins, and the inside left scored Hamilton’s third point with a really beautiful drive. Timms scored Huntly’s first goal from a penalty given against Brooks for holding Burt. Huntly again scored a few minutes later, Burt beating Beaucham with a low drive. Timms was applauded for a fine clearance. Allen scored Hamilton’s fourth point from a doubtful position. The game ended : Hamilton 4 Huntly 2 THE PLAYERS. Timms, Brown and Young played a good defensive game for

the home team, Timms especially —after opening rather shakily, ha settled down to play good football .and kicked a fine length. Irving and Burt were the pick of the forwards. Hamilton were well served by 11 Gubbins who was perhaps the L best forward on the field. Fur- ? ther behind, Marston played 1 weli and was missed by the ” .home team.
