Meeting of Householders.
A COMMITTEE ELECTED. ) The third meeting of house- , holders called for the purpose of , electing a school committee was held in the district school on Monday night. At the first meeting the attendance was so small that no committee was elected, - while the election of the com- [ mittee at the second meeting was , declared informal by the Board . of Education, and hence a third meeting became necessary. On the motion of Mr E. W. Ruston whose seconder was Mr C. Starr, Mr Jas. Elliot was elected chairman. Mr Elliot, after expressing his pleasure at seeing so many present, read the advertisement calling the meeting, and explained that the business of the evening was the election of nine members as a school committee for the current year. The annual report and balance sheet had been read and approved at the first meeting, so that it was unnecessary to deal with these again. As no candidates had been nominated in writing he called for nominations the meeting appointing the Rev. Mr Richards and Mr W. Jolley,to act as scrutineers. As fourteen candidates were proposed for the nine seats, a ballot became necessary, the result of the voting being announced by the scrutineers as follows :
The first nine were declared . duly elected, the result being received with considerable ap- - plause. Mr Lambert on behalf of the defeated candidates thanked those who had supported them, expressing the opinion that the committee elected would prove a
harmonious body, and work well together in the interests of the pupils of the school. He congratulated the members on their election, and anticipated a successful year In acknowledging Mr Lambert’s congratulations the chairman thought the anticipations just voiced would characterise the year’s work. The new committee would have the advice and assistance of three ladies, who, no doubt, would keep the male members up to the mark, A vote of thanks to the chairman brought proceedings to a close. THE NEW COMMITTEE. The newly elected committee met at the close of the householders meeting, all the members being present except Mrs Harris. On the motion of Mr Black, seconded by Mr Starr, Mr James Elliot was re-elected chairman, Mr J. Gardner being unanimously chosen as secretary. The chairman and secretary were authorised to sign cheques on behalf of the committee, and it was decided to hold the meeting on the last Wednesday of every month.
