Meeting of Householders.

A COMMITTEE ELECTED. The first meeting of householders called together for the purpose of electing a school committee having proved 1 utile, a second meeting, called by the Board of Education, was held on Monday evening when fifteen householders attended. Unfortunately, a number of others arrived while the election was in progress, and as the doors were kept closed, they were unable to obtain admittance. On the motion of Mr E. Ruston, Mr James Elliot was called to the chair. In his opening remarks the chairman regretted that, owing to laQk of attendance, the first meeting of householders called together had proved abortive. The Board of Education was in formed of the fact, with the result that to-night’s meeting had been called. He regretted to see so few present, but hoped that the lack of numbers would be more than made good by the energy and attention to duty that would charcterise the new committee. The annual report and balance sheet had’ been submitted to, and approved by those piesent at the last meeting, so that the object of the present gathering would be confined to the election of a committee Nine members were required, and only one written nomination had been received. He, there- 4 for called for nominations. Mr L. B. Harris, junr., moved that the old committee be reelected as a body. He had followed the reports of the meetings held during the past year with much interest, and from what he knew the meeting could not do better than entrust the work to the same gentlemen again. The chairman thanked Mr Harris for the compliment paid to the out - going committee, but was afraid that he could not accept the motion, as it appeared necessary that every candidate should, either verbally or in writing, acquiesce in, and consent to, such nomination. Mr Harris thereupon withdrew the motion. For the nine places there ten nominations, so that an election became necessary. Mr Harris, on the motion of the chairman, whose seconder was Mr C. Starr, was unanimously appointed scrutineer, a second householder, at the request of the chairman, checking the figures. As a result of the vote the following were declared duly elected, each candidate polling fourteen votes: —Mesdames L. B. Harris, junr., and J. Elliot, Messrs J. Carlyon, J. Elliot, J. Gardner, J, Lambert, H. R. Porter, E. YV. Ruston, and C. Starr. There being no further business the meeting came to an end.
