Huntly Scots Society.
A genera! meeting of the members of the Huntly Scots Society was held on Monday night, the chief, DrR, C. Macdiarmid presiding. The publishers of the “ Scots Pictorial Journal forwarded a copy of the paper, asking the Society to co-operate ill extending the circulation, on the ground that theirs was ! the only illustrated periodical dealing with Scottish affiairs. It was decided to do nothing in the matter. Mr S. Dixon, secretary of the Sports Committee, wrote asking the Society to donate the prizes in connection with a competition for Highland dancing to be held during the concert on the evening of the sports. The meeting resolved istelf into a meeting of the Council, this body resolving to donate six guineas towards a piping competition, the idea evidently being that by securing the appropriate bag-pipe music the success of the dancing competition would be assured, A special general meeting of the society took place on Wednesday evening, the chief (Dr. Macdiarmid) presiding. The chairman explained that the sudden death of one of the members, Mr A. Reid, had caused him to call the present meeting in order that the members of the society might consider the circumstances of the bereaved family. It was unanimously resolved that the sum of ten guineas b 9 donated to the widow, and that other steps be taken to augment, the amount. It was decided that the members show their respect to their deceased fellow countryman by attending the funeral in as large numbers as possible, while, on the motion of the chairman, the appended vote of condolence was carried, all present signifytheir acquiescence in the same by standing in silence ; “ The society records its deep regret at the death of Mr Alexander Reid, Huntly, a member of this Society, and a native of Dairy, Aryshire, Scotland, who died in the Waikato Hospital on 2nd. March, 1914, in the 39th year of his age. The members of the soeie'y express their heartfelt sympathy with the widow, his three daughters and other near relations in their sad bereavement and severe loss. They wish to express their high estimation of the late Mr Reid’s exemplary and sterling character as a man ; of his faithfulness, steadfastness and affectionate nature and disposition as a husband, father, and friend; of his unassuming modesty, integrity, intelligence and shrewdness as a citizen ; and of his sagacious counsel and assiduous work as a member of this society. The secretary was instructed to send a copy of this resolution to Mrs Reid, signed by the officeof the society.”
