The New Bridge.
At last we have definite news as to the fate of the approach to the new Traffic Bridge, over which there has been a war of words and arguments between the Government’s Representatives on the one hand and the Chairman and Members of the Town Board on the other for the past 12 months, as to whether there should be a level crossing over the main street, with its necessary embankments, or a subway, andjwe are more than pleased to say that the |Board have been granted their request and a subway will be put in. The following is a copy of a telegram received from Mr Bollard M.P. on Wednesday last, and from the same we mav conclude that the Public Works Dept, will put the work in hand at once; “ Minister Ins decided to make subway and the approach to the bridge from Raynor’s Rd. as requested by the Town Board. ” Much has been said in these pages and full details given regarding this all important work, an 1 its ui de of construction, and it would he useless to go further into the matter, hut we are sure that the nnj rity of Ratepayers will agree with us when we say that every praise is due to the Town B >ard for the great figivt they have put up in the interests of the Town. We put aside the question of j the spoliation of property and the ' main South Road etc, which j would have accurred if an era- I bankmont had been constructed as intended by the Government, and base our contention against this proposal on the dangers of the deadly level crossing system in general, especially in this case where the subway is quite as j expedient and effective. We realise that level crossings ! must be, if we wi h our railways j to be extended, but if there is an j alternative let us have it, for it | / vnnot he contested that this j i town has not had its full share of j | accidents and deaths with the ! present level crossings, which are still a I one of contention between the Railway Department, and everyone who his the interest of the town and the welfare of the townspeople at heart. A Local Authority is ever the butt of sarcasm and grumbling from the Ratepayers who elect them, and Shakosp *are spoke true when he caused Mark Anthony to say “ The evil that men do j lives after them, the good is oft j interred with their hones, ” but let us give credit where credit is due and acknowledge our ind ‘btedness to the Board in this instance. I Much praise is due to Mr R. F. j Bollard, M.P. who has given asms .me * in ev *ry way possible to bring the Board’s scheme to fruition, for he as well as the B »ard lias had to fight a very up hill fight, how strenuous a one is known to only a few.
