SCHOOL BREAK-UP
AT KAIHINU. A representative gathering of parents and friends assembled at the break-up of the Kaihinu school on Wednesday, ! December 20. The school/was tastefully decorated by the pupils and’ the greet- ( ing “A Merry Xmas” -artistically -. inscribed in ferns.upon the wall by the. Maori pupils, bore testimony to the •festive spirit of Christmas. Previous to the prize-giving a short concert was . given by the pupils, Miss Routlcdge presiding at the piano. The programme was 4 S follows Song by the school, “The Fairy Glade” ; song-by the primer classes “Peggy Wig” ; dance, Sailor’s (Hornpipe,. Betty Finch j recitation “Ea s y to Live lVith,” Blanche Dove; haka by five Maori boys; song “Good Mother Hen” bv the tinies; recitation “Ambition” -Ralph Miller; “The Coalman,” Nola Doyle ; song, “The Blacksmith” St. II boys ; dance, “The Half-moon” fit. JI and II pupils. The chairman* of the school committee, Mr A. Richards, in presenting the gardening prizes congratulated the children on the high standard «f excellence they (had achieved in their gardens, the boys -in (the vegetable . plots, and the girls in the flower gardens. The attendance roll of honour .was unveiled and the following certificates presented : i . At the close gof the prize-giving ceremony., the. Rev. ~Mr, Hamilton, of Kumara/ who has been' paying fortnightly visits to the school for religious inaddressed a few appropriate remarks to all assembled. . , ...
Edward Finch, .after a neat l speech, called ifoiv three .hearty cheers ..for the committee. He voiced the appreciation of' the ..whole school for the. generous treatment accorded them in regard to prizes and gifts of and biscuits. Vociferous cheers were also given, “the chairman” and “the teachers.”
