DEER MENACE

KILLINGS DURING PAST YEAR

WELLINGTON, December 19-

Figures showng the Government’s effort to combat the deer menace in New Zealand during ,the year ended September 30 last were presented to the House of Representatives to-day in a return sought by ,Mr H. Holland \C., Christchurch North).

The return showed that 16,137 deer have been killed during the year. 8062 by departmental parties and 8075 by private persons. The cost of destroying deer was £3487 in the South Island, and £BO in the North. As against .this £1193 has been recovered from the -sale of skins. There are credits of £712 outstanding, and the value of skins on hand is estimated at £650, making a total of £2555.
