THE WRONG FINGER AMPUTATED

A mistake on the part of the operating surgeon resulted in a patient at the Public Hospital having the wrong linger amputated during a recent operation, and it is likely that the North Canterbury Hospital/ Board will (be faced with a claim for damages. The patient was a joinery worker, who was admitted to the Hospital several weeks ago after an accident at a Sydenham factory. He had already lost the little finger on his right hand and on this occasion ho had badly injured the linger next to it, Attempts to heal the injury having failed it was decided to amputate the finger. The surgeon was a young, but fully qualified practitioner, on the staff of the Hospital. He took charge of the /operation, lnistead of the third finger, he removed the middle finger. The case will probably he settled out of court. It is understood that '.the hospital Committee of the Board has already made ,an inquiry as to the cause.
